Overview

This manual presents both theory and practical approaches regarding brick masonry. It provides background information on the various classification of bricks used in the modern building construction industry. The focus shall be on the bricks that prompt eco-friendly and sustainable architecture development. In addition, it provides detailed information on the various tools and equipment that one shall encounter when conducting brickwork and their proper, safe application. 

The manual educates one on the various types of mortar used for brick masonry, the requirements of a good mortar, mortar ratio regarding the different types of work, mortar mixing procedures, precautionary measures to be adhered to when mortar mixing, the various types of concrete mixers and their respective applications.


Objectives of the course

At the end of the training course, the trainee will be able to:

  • To be well conversant with the various types of bricks and their respective application.
  • To be able to identify all brick-laying tools and equipment.
  • To know all the various types of mortar used for brick masonry.
  • To be well acquainted with the manual and machine mortar mixing procedures.
  • To understand all the bonds used in brick masonry.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of training using this manual, the learner should be able to:
  • Able to select the best suitable brick types for a particular construction scenario.
  • Properly and safely operate all hand, joining, power, leveling, measuring, and lifting equipment used during brickwork operations.
  • Physically prepare all the different types of brick mortars with their correct mixing ratio and ensure they showcase all the properties of a suitable mortar mix.
  • Techniques and procedures to be carried out to ensure good brick bonding is attained.
  • Construct brick walls for a four-sided room.

This course is intended to equip the trainees with the knowledge and skills. So that to make the craftsmen
competent in performing the plumbing tasks, which include drainage, water installation systems, sewer
systems, and metals works.

At the end of the training course, the trainee will be able to:
i. Maintain and apply safety precautions within the plumbing working environment
ii. Choose, use, care for, and maintain tools and equipment used in the plumbing.
iii. Apply scientific knowledge to solve problems related to the plumbing trade
iv. Identify various materials and their uses in the plumbing trade
v. Draw and interpret working drawings for given plumbing tasks
vi. Appreciate the various occupational and training opportunities available in the construction
industry
